Characteristics of category 6 cables
1. Cable tension
Do not exceed the cable tension specified by the cable manufacturer. Excessive tension will deform the twist distance of the wire pair in the cable, seriously affect the ability of the cable to suppress noise and the structured return loss of the cable, which will change the impedance of the cable and damage the overall return loss performance.
2. Cable bending radius
Avoid excessive bending of the cable, as this will change the twist distance of the cable neutral pair. If bent excessively, the pair may spread, resulting in impedance mismatch and unacceptable return loss performance. In addition, it will change the relationship between the pitches of the four pairs inside the cable, resulting in the problem of noise suppression. In general, the bending radius of the cable shall not be less than 8 times of the installed cable diameter. For typical category 6 cables, the bending radius shall be greater than 50mm.
3. Line pair spread
At the cable termination point, the lay distance of each pair in the cable shall be as close to the data center as possible. The twisted pitch of the pair is calculated by the cable manufacturer. Changing the twisted pitch of the cable will have an adverse impact on the performance of the cable. Although the ISO and TIA super category 5 wiring standards specify the length of wire pair spread (13mm), they do not make such provisions for Category 6 wiring. The current recommendation is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
4. Cable compression
Avoid compressing the cable by making the cable tie too tight. If the cable is too tight, the stranded wire inside the cable will be deformed and its performance will be affected. Generally, the return loss will be more obviously in the unqualified state. The effect of return loss is accumulated, and each too tight cable tie pair will increase the total loss. Hooks and loop cable ties are recommended.
5. Cable knot
When pulling out the cable from the reel, be aware that the cable may knot sometimes. If the cable is knotted, it should be regarded as damaged and the cable should be replaced. The installation pressure will make the installer straighten the cable knot. However, damage has occurred and will be detected during cable testing.
6. Cable weight
The weight of category 6 cables is about twice that of category 5 cables. The weight of 24 category 6 cables one meter long is close to 1.0kg, while the weight of the same number of category 5 or super category 5 cables is only 0.6kg. When using suspension wires to support cables, the weight of cables must be considered. It is recommended that each suspension line support point support up to 24 cables per bundle.
7. Number of cables in bundle
When any number of cables are bundled together in a long parallel length, the line pair capacitive coupling of different cables in the bundled cables with the same twist distance will significantly improve the crosstalk. This is called "alien crosstalk", and the best way to eliminate the adverse effects of alien crosstalk is to minimize the length of parallel cables.
8. Peel off the cable sheath
At the cable termination point, the exposed pairs from the sheath to the data center after termination must be kept to a minimum. If it is not necessary to peel off the cable sheath, the wire can be directly connected to the data center. TIA or ISO wiring standards specify the stripped sheath length. By minimizing the stripped sheath length, the twisted pair spacing inside the cable is ensured to achieve the most effective transmission path. If the sheath peeled off on IDC is too large, it will damage the next and FEXT performance of Cat 6 cabling system.
